In one 8-10 sentence paragraph, respond to the questions below.
We meet Oedipus when he appears at the very beginning of the play, in the Prologue. What do the priest and the other Thebans think of him? Use specific pieces of evidence to support your thinking. If he were your leader, what would you think of him? What do you think he was like as a person? Finally, in the last couple of sentences, think about a main character in a movie or book you really like: does he or she start off a good person? Describe what he or she is like at the beginning and then BRIEFLY explain how he or she ends the story.
The priest and other Thebans think of Oedipus as a leader and as a God. Although Oedipus is not a God, he is one step below known as a King, and all of his citizens see him as a God because they respect him so much. For example the priest explains to Oedipus, "No man questions your power to rule land." on (pg.5). This quote shows that Oedipus is seen as a leader and very important to everyone in his country. If Oedipus was my leader I would respect him very much as of right now, because Oedipus made a very impressive choice by listening to the oracle in front of all of his citizens instead of listening alone. By this decision it shows that Oedipus cares for everyone, and that he wants to be truthful. I would think that Oedipus is a very honest person, simply because of his decision but also becsuse he explained to all of his citizens, "...and never doubt that I will help you In every way I can;..." on (pg. 4). Oedipus hasn't been the King forever so he knows what it's like to be under someone else's rule, so he wants to be as fair as he can possibly be, so citizens will respect him. A character in a book that I really liked was Katniss from The Hunger Games. In the beginning of the first book Katniss starts off as a quite and independent person, but as the hunger games go on she becomes more dependent and starts to trust others. At the end of the second hunger games book Catching Fire, Katniss turned out to be completely different by being more dependent and less quite by wanting to do more and being more interactive.
ReplyDeleteThe Priest and other Thebans think very highly of their ruler, Oedipus, because he has saved the city in the past from a plague. They obviously think highly of the King because they are putting all their faith in him to save them again. They say, “ O mighty King, we turn to you: Find us safety…” I too recognize Oedipus as a good leader. Oedipus has exemplified qualities of being a good leader because he is upfront and honest with his people. Even when he was talking about an important matter, he chose to be upfront and keep his people accurately informed as well. For example, when Creon suggest that they talk in private, Oedipus intervenes and decides that it is best to talk in front of everyone. In the book Russian Roulette, the latest addition to the Alex Rider series, Yassen is the main character. Yassen grows up as a normal boy; he goes to school, plays with friends, and lives with his parents. However one day, everyone in his village dies from an explosion except him and he is forced to survive on his own. Fast forward 30 years and he is an assassin. Obviously or at least hopefully not realistic but this is Yassen's story. He starts out as a kind and naive young boy and ends the story as a killer...not the nicest human being if you ask me!
ReplyDeleteThe priest and Thebans think very highly of Oedipus. They are putting their faith in him, to rid the plague and bring them back out of this slump into a prosperous life, like he did when he rid Thebe’s of the Sphinx. “...Think how all men call you liberator for triumph long ago...” this quote shows, that Oedipus saved them once, and in context the priest is saying look at all these men that follow you because of you savior long ago, if you do this again you legacy will live on. The priest also says “...restore life to your city..” this quote shows that the people trust him with their home and they made it his home to because he was the savior. If Oedipus was my leader, I would be proud to follow him and trust him, because when Creon comes back from Delphi, Oedipus could have just as easily said let us talk about this in private, but he let his people hear. He showed that he was honest and caring. In person, I think he would be a strong character. A series that I love and have read many times is Harry Potter. Severus Snape, sounds evil and acts that way towards some students. He definitely plays favoritism, and can be very cruel, but in the seventh book, it shows how much of a character you missed, and how even though he was cruel, he was also loving, and cared very much for Harry.
ReplyDeleteAt the beginning of the play Oedipus is introduced into the story. The Priest and the Thebans think very highly of him. This is because Oedipus once saved the city of Thebes from the plague years ago. "Restore life to your city! Think how all men call you liberator for your triumph long ago." If he were my leader I think I would also look up to him as the people of Thebes do. I respect him for being opened with his people and letting the truth be told in front of his people. I think that Oedipus knows his power and is somewhat humble and quiet about it. But I do think he knows how to handle most situations and is a good king to his people. In the movie Chasing Mavericks, Jay has the dream of surfing one the biggest and most powerful waves on the planet. He starts out as an average 16 year old Californian kid but throughout the movie works extremely hard at achieving his goal. He ended up surfing the wave and becoming a hero. His work in the water achieving his goal made him a better student in school and also made him a better person all together.

ReplyDeleteWe first me Oedipus at the beginning of the play when the priest and the people of Thebes come to him for help. Oedipus in the play is the king of Thebes and is viewed as someone who poses powers that can help save them and an important leader leader. We know this because they say in the play, "Restore life to your city! Think how all men call you liberator for your triumph long ago." If Oedipus was to ever be my leader I feel as if I would be able to trust him right away. The fact that he was willing to hear extremely important information at the same time as the people of his city shows how willing he is to try and help the city. In my opinion he seems like he was a very honest and caring person who really just wanted to see his city thrive not fall to the ground. One of my all time favorite characters in a book is Katniss Everdeen from the Hunger Games trilogy. At first Katniss is a very shy but fierce character. She doesn’t really trust that many people and is only thinking about how to makes sure her and her family can stay alive. As the story goes on, Katniss becomes more trusting and lets more people into her life that she never thought she would.
ReplyDeleteI think the priest and the other think of him as a king but also as one of them because he comes and talks to them himself instead of sending a messenger. I think the people like and respect him because of this but is he were my king I would think he would be doing this so that the people would like him. I would not think of him as my king just because he solved a riddle. I would like of him as a really lucky person that came in a time when we need a king so I would not see him as a good leader. In the movie Die hard a person that starts as a normal cop ends as a butt kicking super hero.
ReplyDeleteThe priest and Thebans are ready to trust that Oedipus will solve the problem. They recognize that he is the rightful king as said in page 5 when the priest says: “No man questions your power to rule the land”. Though they bring up the subject of the Sphinx to remind Oedipus that he had saved Thebe before, to encourage him to save the city again. If he was my leader I would be glad that he takes a personable approach to solving problems. Like when he went to talk to the people himself and not a messenger. He also seems to care deeply about the problem and seems motivated to solve it. Though he seems like a good leader he sometimes he seemed a little arrogant. One character I like was Caleb from the book Divergent. He started off as a nice brother to the main protagonist, though it is revealed later that he was leaking information to the antagonists.

ReplyDeleteThe priest and the people of Thebes love their king. When he first came into their city he was able to save it. The people think his wisdom is unparalleled by any other mortal. They think that he is the answer to all of their problems. I think he was a relatively normal guy before he solved the riddle of the sphinx. I think that Oedipus might have some sort of "sophmore slump." Now that he has everyone believing that he will be great he has more pressure. In sports a lot of times this leads to players in their second year playing much worse (ie. Cam Newton, RG3). I think that in the case of RG3 that at the beginning everyone loved him but just because he played one bad season people started to second guess him. I think that Oedipus may be replaced by a Ancient Greek version of Kirk Cousins.

ReplyDeleteIn the beginning of the story we meet the king Oedipus. The priest and thebans think very highly of there king. We know this because the priest states" Great Oedipus, O powerful King of Thebes! You see how all the ages of our people cling to your alter steps (page 4). He also states "you are not one of the immortal gods we know, yet we have come to you to make our prayer" (page 5). If Oedipus was my leader i would think very highly of him because of the way he can connect with the community by talking directly to the thebans and by suffering for his people. Oedipus tells Creon that he doesn't care if the people hear the news as he says "Let them all here it. It is for them i suffer, more than for myself. As a person i think he was very loyal to the people but is selfish as well. on page 9 he says "And not as though it were for some distant friend, but for my own sake, to be rid of evil... By avenging the murdered king I protect myself". He says this to save himself from the plague not specifically for his people or to be a good king. In one of my favorite book/movie series The Hinger Games Katnis Everden starts out as a very nice caring person that shows her support towards other people and is playing the game to stay alive, but in the end she starts to revolt against the system and does not kill of her friend and accomplice Peta, and again in the second move Catching Fire she is revolting against the capitol and against President Snow.
ReplyDeleteThe priest trusted him and he thought that he could save the city. “no man questions your power to rule the land” I think that he is a good leader i would trust him. he is a good person who means well. In the movie step brothers dale and brennan start off not bad people but bad towards each other and they become bad people because of that but then throughout the movie they start to bond and become nicer. they start to care about each other and aren't as mean. they become genuine people. They start to grow up and eventually realize how much they mean to each other and what started out as hating each other they became best friends and true brothers.
ReplyDeleteThe people of Thebes trust in Oedipus completely and look up to him to fix everything. On page five the Priest said “. . . And wisest in the ways of God. You saved us from the Sphinx . . . yet you were never better informed than we, nor could we teach you: It was some god breathed in you to set us free. This quote jumped out to me because it shows how much the people of Thebes rely and trust their king to go and fix everything that goes wrong. If he was my leader now I think I would be very untrusting with him. I would think he is trying too hard to look likeable. For example when he asked his brother-in -law to tell him the Oracle with the people listening, I would take that as him trying to hard. One of the most interesting character in a book I have read recently is Tris, who is the main character in Divergent. At the beginning of the story she is fairly weak and extremely loyal and trusting but nearing the end she is a lot more cynical, she learns to fight, to lie and to keep secrets. She also learns to manipulate people, but over the course of the book she keeps her good traits and still manages to be a good person.
ReplyDeleteOedipus is a King of Thebes and he is introduced to us in the play when his people come to ask for help. When of of the many suppliants a priest is called upon to speak for the people and tell them what is happening.
ReplyDeleteSurprisingly enough, he is a good king her listens to the concerns directly from the people, instead of by way of messenger. This pleases the people, which also contributes the faith they have in him that he can solve this problem. I myself would not really like him because he is a little too trusting in religion and superstion. Snape is a very interesting person he starts off and is presented in a way in which makes him look bad. However, he becomes known as brave and noble to Dumbledore.
the priest and others think of him a great man, coming to him for all sorts of help. they believe he is the one who will aid them. the priest says all sorts of people are at his steps. if he were my leader, I would think highly of him because of his transparency. as a person I think he rarely lied. One character from a story I like is Kelsey. She is not at all a good person, in her universe there is no such thing as a good person. She is first described as “an ordinary girl” if you don’t count the fact that she has been 13 for ten years or so, has retractable fangs, can cast magic, and cause mass destruction with her rage. At the end of the story, she has not changed much. Though she has made friends and been to new places, those friends have died and those places destroyed by her.
ReplyDeleteWhen we meet Oedipus at the beginning of the play, we can see that he is adored by the Thebans and Priests. It is apparent that he cares about his people because he did not need to come and see them personally. They respect him because he was able to solve the riddle of the Sphinx and lift the previous plague that fell upon Thebes. However, because he has done it once, they expect him to be able to lift another one. It will take more than the compassion Oedipus has shown for his people, explaining that he feels the suffering of all who have come to see him. Personally, based on what we know so far about Oedipus I would be happy to have him as my leader because he has sincere emotion for his people. One character that I like from the book "The Magicians" is named Quentin Coldwater. He is introduced to us as a lonely misfit with few friends in the beginning of the book. He is a good person, all though he doesn't do much in general. Throughout the three books, he undergoes a massive personality change and becomes much more outgoing and ready to take on life.
